The global COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect the prestige beauty industry in China. To find success and thrive in this evolving environment, beauty brands need to understand and embrace the "new normal". E-commerce continues to grow in the country, with a significant increase in cross-border purchasing, and rising sales of luxury products through the domestic duty-free channel. E-commerce continues to grow — 895 new stores opened on Tmall while offline channels struggled. Cross-border sales grew 152% at the expense of a slowdown in the travel retail channel. Sales of luxury products through the domestic duty free channel in Hainan Province increased by 130% in June 2020. Beauty brands need to capitalize on these changes and focus on sustainability in order to build a successful strategy for China.
